Puah Kim Hai was born in the year 1950. In 1965, he started formal art lessons under the Principal of Malaysia Institute of Art, Mr. Zhong Zheng Shan, and he graduated from the Malaysia Institute of Art in 1972. He later specialized in batik paintings. In 1980, he pursued Chinese brush painting under the great Lingnan Art Master Mr. Yang Shan Shen.
Mr. Puah’s paintings have been exhibited in Malaysia, United States of America, China, Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia. He also held solo art exhibitions at Japan Ginja Hinoki Art Gallery, Malaysia Wisma Soka Gakkai, City Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur; Kuala Lumpur Chin Woo Art Gallery and Malaysia Fo Guang Shan Art Gallery.
Among the awards he received are The Maple Leaf Award by Canadian Oversea Chinese Calligraphy & Painting Association, Toronto, Canada; Silver Prize Award at The International Wash Painting Competition held at Hainan, China and Japan National Art Award.
He is currently the President of Malaysia Lingnan Art Society, Advisor of New York International Chinese Art Society and Advisor of Australia Lingnan Art Society.
Mr. Puah’s paintings have been kept by local and overseas private collectors as well as art galleries and museums like Guilin Museum of China, Australia Chinese Museum, Korea Cultural & Art Gallery, Taiwan Art Gallery, Malaysia National Art Gallery, Japan Chinese Brush Painting Association, Soka Gakkai Malaysia, Malaysia Fo Guang Shan Art Gallery and many others.
